CREEK CONNECT at BEAVERCREEK HIGH SCHOOL!

The Purpose of Creek Connect

Creek Connect is designed to give students a break from their normal routine while providing opportunities to engage with staff members around areas of interest, curiosity, and connection. Over the past ten years we have worked hard to build a culture where students can identify and develop relationships with trusted adults. Oftentimes, those relationships develop simply because students are assigned to a teacher, advisor, or coach and have regular contact with them - but there are so many other students in this building that staff never have the opportunity to connect with simply because the school day structure hasn’t allowed the time or space for it. That is one of the reasons Creek Connect is so important. We know that students have repeatedly told us they want a break from the school routine and opportunities to explore their interests. Creek Connect gives us a chance to honor that feedback while creating additional opportunities for relationship building, student voice, and student choice.

Impact of the Sessions We Offer

As we reviewed the list of staff-submitted activities, we were excited to see the variety of ideas and interests that will be available to students. We elicited feedback from our Student Advisory Council, data from YouScience and the Panorama Survey to offer sessions to students that have real--world applications. Our original vision was to offer Creek Connect more frequently through a modified block schedule but since we have remained on a traditional 7-period day, we are currently limited in how often we can offer these opportunities. If Creek Connect becomes a more regular part of our schedule in the future, we may have more flexibility to incorporate more specialized group meetings that students could attend during the school day rather than staying after school to be involved and find "their place". Once or twice a month, students will use an online program  to "choose their own adventure" and attend sessions that are of interest to them. Some activities planned are: academic review time, nature walks, personal fitness, meditation, gardening, pickleball, car maintenance, board games, crochet basics, hair tinseling, “how to tie a tie”, CPR and more! We have 4 staff-created activity sessions for the first semester; teachers will have approximately 25 students per session and students can select different activities on each Creek Connect Wednesday.

Why This Matters

We sincerely appreciate our staff's willingness to go above and beyond for our students. We are genuinely excited to see what our students choose—and, perhaps even more importantly, what they tell us afterward. If we allow students to see us as humans who are interested in more than just course curriculum, we believe we can have an even greater impact on them. Grades matter. Test scores matter. GPAs matter. Curriculum maps and graduation requirements matter. All of those things matter. But you will have a hard time convincing our administrative team that those are the only reasons any of our staff stepped into this profession. I hope Creek Connect gives our staff permission to step outside their academic comfort zones and host sessions that are of interest to our student body.

Our first Creek Connect bell schedule will run on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Other Connect sessions are planned for: Wednesdays - October 7, November 11, and December 9, 2026. Ferguson Hall will run on the same bell schedule as BHS and will be participating in their own Creek Connect sessions as well.
